WW1 Medals, Recognition & Awards for the Illawarra

WWI Medals

Most of those who served in WW1 from 1914 – 1915 received the following awards : 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal – while those who served from 1916 received the  British War Medal, Victory Medal. Sometimes it was possible to be Mentioned in Despatches. Also many Illawarra people received Awards for Bravery :

Distinguished Service Order – in WW1 this was an award only for Officers of Rank of Major or higher, ie above the rank of Captain, and could be awarded to Junior Officers where they had only just missed out on being awarded the Victoria Cross
